Our clan was forged through the actions of one: Elroth, Paladin of the Light. Our story begins with his story. Only a piece of it, though, for his travels are many. This is his story. This is our story.

When our story began, Elroth resided in a different clan. An exemplary mage, gifted in the art of magic, Elroth had the honor of becoming a protector of his clan. Along with many others he vowed his life to the safety of the clan. It was an easy job, then everything changed.

The Shade flooded into the clearing in the wood where the small clan had made its home. Someone on the inside had staged this coup. The Shade ripped through the village without meeting any resistance. All who crossed its path were changed, voluntarily or not. Very few survived.

Ironically, the last place the invasion reached was the main gates where the guard stood watch. The battle was great. The flashes of light could be seen for miles around as mages threw their magic into the fray and warriors tore into the inky blackness. Despite the ferocity of the fight, it wasn't more than a few minutes before nearly the entire guard had fallen.

Elroth was the last guard left unchanged. He fled the mass of darkness, flying over the forest surrounding the village. He stopped just outside on a large pillar. The Shade had followed.

Tapping into the stores of magical energy that ran deep through the ruins, Elroth hurled bolts of light, searing through the darkness. He let off an unending barrage of magical blasts. After several hours his magical stores began to give way, but he ignored the exhaustion and carried on. He would not allow the Shade to take other clans as it took his.

Many hours had passed when the last wisp of darkness was extinguished. Elroth had been fighting for nearly a day. Exhausted, physically and spiritually, he fell from his pillar and collapsed to the ground.

When Elroth awoke, he found himself in a large circular room with an open roof. Hoisting himself up, he recognized it as the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. He looked around in wonder, for it was truly as grand as it was said. Finally, his eyes settled on the large radiant dragon sitting at the far end of the room, looking through a small hole in the wall, and out to the sea.

An airy female voice drifted from her, it seemed to penetrate the very air and burrow itself deep into his soul. "It is nice to gaze out across the many waters. The mysteries that could lie beyond our sight are too numerous to fathom."

She stopped for a moment, turning her head slightly towards Elroth. "Today my gaze was shifted. The most beautiful light show in Sornieth, the sunrise, was outdone. I watched to the West as bright white lights flashed over the Mirrorlight Promenade."

Elroth blushed, looking down to the ground. "I'm sorry, Exalted One, I could not let the Shade take any more lives."

A beautiful laugh rang through the room. The Lightweaver turned from her view and glided over to Elroth. Her long mouth was pulled up into a caring smile that radiated light. "I was not chastising you. I have lived for thousands of years, but rarely have I seen a dragon so selfless, determined, or talented as you."

Gracefully, the Lightweaver rose high above Elroth, looking down on him. "To those select few are given the honor of being called Paladins of the Light. Gifted and selfless individuals who are called to serve and protect the flight in its darkest hour."

Elroth, stricken by the proposition, looked up at the god. Completely bewildered and honored, he spoke, "O, Enlightened One, I do not deserve this honor. I simply did what was required, nothing more."

"For this reason, that you would believe that your life is required if others are in danger, is the very reason that I am presenting you this honor."

She began to exude light until the entire tower was white and only her form was visible. "Elroth, do you swear to uphold the pursuit of truth and justice, bringing light to all that is dark; to protect those who stand in need, giving of everything you have even to your last breath; and to raise a clan that will be taught to shine even when there is no light around, standing as an example to those who are lost?"

"I-I swear it."

The light intensified, and Elroth could feel immense power surging into him, tearing his body apart piece by piece and rebuilding him far more powerful than before.

Eventually, the light faded, and the Lightweaver stood before Elroth. "You have been remade as a servant of the light. Go out and shine as a beacon to the world."

Elroth left the beacon, not really understanding what just happened to him, but he knew one thing:

If the Shade came back, it would not be ready.
