Hey! Welcome to my clan, I've been away from FR for quite a while so pretty much everything is under construction. |
Wailing Winds Weyr
The lair of the Wailing Winds clan is carved into the sides of a massive cleft in the Ascent. Far away from this place, a large road starts in a trading city by the Twisting Crescendo. As it climbs, crossing many bridges (ranging from sturdy stone to precious bamboo), it becomes little more than a dirt path, until in the far northwest corner of the Plateau, it passes by a sign. The sign announces that you have reached the Wailing Winds Weyr, which is currently open to merchants. From hereon it is Wailing Winds territory, where dragons can be seen daily foraging in the shrubby undergrowth. Here and there along the path are the wind-battered homes of those who don’t like the bustle of a clan center.
The path here is well-worn and well tended for. Small stone ground lanterns cast a warm glow at night, guiding you to the clan’s main lair. Abruptly, the ground falls away, and the Wailing Winds Weyr comes into full view. This deep, narrow gorge has been taken over by a clan. These Wind drakes have wrested a lair from the narrow ledges, shallow caves, and raging river far below. It is a thriving home, where dragons of all shapes and sizes and flights fly together. The path continues in the form of narrow stairs and ramps, carved into the stone and made half of boards.
Here, the canyon has naturally widened, and many flying structures are present. Half the lair is made of a network of airships, balloons, rope bridges, and kites. Each is tethered to a platform or hook so they don’t drift into another’s fabric. The smaller balloons are usually used as storage, leaving the zeppelins and large balloons as practice areas, social centers, and anything else the clan needs. As wind tradition generally goes, the fabric is flame-coloured and patterned. Almost all of these structures are kept as near to the cliffside as possible, to allow sunlight to reach the plaza and more of the cliff face.
Wooden platforms are also abundant in this lair, ranging from rickety stairs to sturdy paths bolted to the cliff faces. The largest of these have street names and function as such for the dragons who live in the cave-homes off of them. Here and there, rope bridges branch off from the path and sway precariously from one side of the canyon to another. Most are held up in the middle by small platform balloons. The main one even has a sort-of roof! Around midway down the cliff, on the east side, the steep face of dark stone has given way to a broad terrace. On this large flat area, a plaza of cobblestones is set up. The center is kept clear for incoming visitors, but all around are stalls and a few storefronts and buildings. The entire south half of this terrace is lush green and slightly overgrown with plants, for here Lokith has forged a garden. Willow trees and bamboo are grove in well-tended and carefully watered swaths among clearings of flowers and herb. The park is a sanctuary, and a pride of it’s tender and clan alike. But it does not have room to sprawl onwards, for the cliff resumes. Down in the depths of the valley the air is colder and relatively undisturbed, with very few dragons making their homes between the moss-covered boulders. The river is cold and clean and very fast (many a fallen possession have been lost in the flow).
Many dragons live in caves here. Some dragon families live on floating platforms, too, but the caves are much more reliable. Mined out by claws and magic, windows and thresholds dot the stone face. Some of these doors are much grander than the others, such as that to the library, the ancient halls, the hoard, the vault, and treasury. The ancient halls are indeed very old, dating back to before the Wailing Winds dragons tethered their first balloons. The farther back into the stone you go, the tunnels become rougher and the candles fewer. No one truly knows how far back they go, what secrets they hold… Or what may dwell in them. The ancient halls have many entrances, and are a deadly maze to those who wander in by accident. But off the vast circular hall, lit by stained glass windows set into the cliff itself, eleven rooms are frequented by dragons. These are the clan’s prized shrines, one to each deity. Offerings are left daily. Other caves visited often are the stores, the healer’s complex (which spans upwards two levels of walkway), the laboratory, the workshops, and of course the hatchery.
The Wailing Winds Weyr is true to its name. Howling gales set the kites rattling, shrieking gusts snuff out the lanterns, and keening breezes push at the warm-coloured patchwork balloons. It was hit hard by the Battles for the Bay, as Windstar Bay is less than a day’s flight away, but the downed balloons have been replaced and the lair and it’s clan are currently prospering.
