✧ the Strategist

Look twice and you will avoid the Sandstrike's sting; think thrice and you will find a better crossing than through the Sandstrike's den.

Her bright plumage belies a quiet and serious disposition. Styx is as laconic as her father, and as kind and fiercely loyal as her mother - for that is precisely what Oceanus and Tethys are to her. Styx has never known her birth parents, nor how she came to be on the Zephyr Steppes - perhaps a stray gust had snatched her up from the edges of the Ashfall Waste. Her earliest memory is of being buffeted by breezes too strong for her hatchling wings, and then gentle hands halting her fall. Tethys' wings, raised to shield her, had seemed wide enough to encompass the world.

Styx has taken to the interests of her adoptive parents just as much as she has their traits. From a young age, she showed an affinity for combat that Oceanus was thrilled to cultivate. She enjoys the heat of a brawl, although her approach to fighting is far more cerebral than her adoptive father or her mate Delphi's, utilising tactics and agility to compensate for her slight frame. Strategy games are a favoured bonding activity between Styx and Tethys. They began as a way for Tethys to tutor her child in both tactics and reading people - invaluable skills for a trader! - until teaching evolved into a genuine contest of skills, as Styx proved to be more than Tethys' match as she grew older.

But it was Tethys' introduction to the many scrolls and books of the Windswept Plateau, amassed by the adventurers that call this flight home, that ignited Styx's dearest passion: stories. There is no other flight that Styx would rather belong to. She adores the songs that pass through here each festival, and as much as she loves Tethys' clan, the highlight of each year for her is when she and Delphi sojourn out to the realms to bring back their own tales.

A keen observer with sharp senses and an inclination towards planning, Styx is slow to act upon desires; when she does act it is usually with a long-term goal in mind, and that goal is almost always accomplished. Her perceptiveness and foresight make her an invaluable right-hand to Tethys' management of the clan. Styx also serves as a main hunter and fighter of the clan, alongside Oceanus and Delphi.

Delphi was adopted into the clan not long after Styx. Growing up together, these best friends became life-mates. Delphi's effervescence draws Styx out of her stoic shell. The two share a love of adventure and combat, combining both by fighting beastclans as they explore the continent in their annual sojourns.

T E T H Y S

A beloved mother figure who once seemed larger than life and able to protect Styx from anything. As Styx began to take a bigger role in managing the clan, their relationship has grown into one of equal partners.

O C E A N U S

A father figure with an indelible influence on who she is. When they are not fighting beasts as a bonding activity, they often gather materials or sort inventory together in quiet companionship.

The coatl expertly navigates the dancing kites above the Cloudsong, her brilliant plumage fluttering gracefully. She's arrived ahead of her easily distracted mate at this year's festivities. Landing, she makes a beeline for the peddlers' alley - she's looking to pick up kite-building materials for her mate to surprise him with.

A golden coatl and her azure imperial mate are taking their time in the tents of carnival games, laughing as they compete with each other.

"Gotcha again," Styx smirks at Delphi, sinking yet another ball in the moving hoop in front of them.

"The next one's mine," Delphi promises, accepting the Windsinger plushy that Styx hands him. "You are going to get so many Cloudkeeper Herald dolls that you could donate them to every hatchling on the Plateau."

"We'll see who gets to walk away with the most prizes. I bet it's not going to be me," Styx taunts.

Styx and Delphi have a rather strange competition they like to play every year. They will attempt every carnival game available, with the goal of beating the other. Sounds simple enough, except that the winner for each game will pass their plush prize to the other, and the true loser of the competition is the dragon who walks away from the Cloudsong with the most plushies in their arms.

Why bother handing over the prizes? is a question they've gotten from many dragons. Wouldn't it be more efficient to just hold onto your own? But Delphi would insist that this ignores the "glorious" origin of the competition.

It had started with Styx and Delphi simply wanting to win cute things for their sweetheart. Delphi wanted to spoil Styx with adorable things, and Styx wanted to make Delphi laugh at silly-looking toys. Then their competitive streaks had gotten in the way, and from there "who can win the other the most toys" snowballed into "who is the ultimate overlord of the carnival games this year" - with "tradition" dictating that the winner is the one who deposits the most toys in the other's claws.

The next game in the tent is a fishing game. Little wooden fish bob on erratic eddies in a small pool, stirred up by a Water nocturne. Styx grins smugly at Delphi. "Oooh, Mister Big Talk and Big Claws is gonna get the dolls again."
