❁ STORY

There are lots of things in the world; lots to see and learn, skills to pick up and wonderful things to try. It’s a big place and Ralhu is from a big town – one of the great cities – a metropolis carved of ice that glitters in the sun and hosts massive festivals each month for the flights to celebrate. A grand place, filled with grand things and individuals. The kind of place that shimmers with possibilities, where folks are told they can do anything – be anyone – if they just try. The thing is… that’s not always true.

Ralhu has a lot of interests: history and language, magic and the natural world, architecture and writing and arts; all things she’s tried. She’s filled with passion and love and hope, but despite the assurances that all things are possible, she’s never felt genuinely good at anything. There’s always someone better. Being overshadowed, being held to high expectations and falling short, being a letdown to those around her, these things create a person. Some might be bitter and angry about it, might try to tear others down with them. Not Ralhu. She faced all the disappointments a heart can bear and let it make her soft.

She has patience and compassion, a kind word and a gentle heart, and she won’t let failure stop her from creating. The brightest smiles come from those who were broken and put themselves back together painstakingly, refusing to be shattered. It’s a lot of work, but perhaps one day her greatest masterpiece will be herself. Ralhu is not always well, she struggles with a lot. Social situations are not easy for her, trying new things can be an overwhelming challenge, there are days when she is so sad that getting up in the morning is the hardest thing she will ever do. But there is always the chance that something will make that struggle worth it.

Finding Saph was one of those things. Ralhu left her family behind, a blood-tie she’s been pretty glad to do away with, she’s lighter now not having harsh words and disapproval thrown her way. But it was lonely too. Saph is brilliant and wonderful and she reminds Ralhu that she has to live for herself.

The Reliquary was hesitant to let her linger, at first. She understands why: she’s not like the dragons who usually stay, she has no strange magic, no fearful talent or morally dubious past to hide from. She was pretty wary of them, too; not wanting to be reluctantly allowed in for Saph’s sake alone. Just once she wanted to be enough all on her own. And somehow, she was. The lair accepted her not for Saph, not because she had a reason to hide, but because in the purest sense, Ralhu just needed a chance.

And sure, there are still dragons in the lair who are better than her at most everything. But she’s allowed to be who she is without judgement. She’s allowed to create: collections of short stories Pen binds into books for the hatchlings, artworks that she smears in bright paint across some darker corners of the lair, statues and jewellery with Riverstone, and most notably, illuminating manuscripts. Pen placed a lot of trust in her for that and together they have created a proper illustrated chronology of the clan. She is allowed to tend to her collection of soft succulents (the only plants she can keep alive), and wander through the woods or along the beach, she can stare dreamily over the plains and imagine what it might be like to be loved so fiercely.

She might not be good at anything, but she has passion and creativity and a new family who have learned enough about her not to pester her when she’s in a bad way and needs space. It’s enough.

ORIGIN / Cryspitia, the glittering heart of the Cloudscrape Crags, is a marvel of ice flight ingenuity. Its spires don’t tower as high as the Crags themselves, but they are a magnificent sight to behold when the sunrise hits them just right and they sparkle like something out of a story. It’s the bustling centre of trade for much of the Icefield, a place where you can buy anything from fruits to killers. There is a rigid hierarchy there, the elite keep to themselves while the lower-class fight over scraps. But despite that, it’s quite a glamourous place to be. If you can stand the cold weather and the inhospitable social challenges.

Fact / Ralhu keeps her pearl in a curious way, a main sphere adorns her staff (for walking and also beating up bandits should they cross her), but others dangle from the haft as well. Some she wears like jewellery. A number of the smaller pearls are for individuals, memories collected together about a single friend or acquaintance. She finds it freeing to be able to cut someone so easily from your life by simply tossing the pearl containing all memory of them into the ocean. Cathartic.

Likes / A little bit of quiet, a place to call her own, and friends who know her well enough to know when she needs both. Saph, her adoptive little sister. And above all, not being told she’s too dreamy to get by in this world. She’s a bit of a hopeless romantic too, but at least Pen keeps quiet about her borrowing of romantic novels or poetry anthologies.

Dislikes / Too much sunlight. Being overwhelmed. That can lead to panic attacks and Ralhu hates how that makes her feel. Sometimes folks have a nasty way of assuming just because she struggles with certain things that she’s being deliberately difficult too (which can lead to those panic attacks). Ralhu is very careful about all of these things and she can’t stand when someone makes it hard for her on purpose.

Interests / Lots of things. Since arriving at the Reliquary though, she’s found herself especially fascinated by Tahvi’s insistence that other societies lived in the lair before them. She has found something of a niche for herself in anthropology, not just of ancient cultures, either, but those around them right now. Whereas Tahvi is all about the exploration of ancient ruins and adventure, Ralhu is more about the quiet library research and cataloguing that goes with it. Mostly though, she just likes to make things. Colourful things, usually.
