Iphis spun the knife in his hands, watching the sun glint off it onto the sand. Movement nearby made him jump, but it was only a lonely scorpion, burrowing itself deeper to avoid the scorching sun. Another predator lies in wait. A pack of mirrors ran past, yelping and nipping at each other’s heels. Unlike the scorpion, the sun didn’t seem to bother them. Neither did Iphis’ still form. He shifted, watching rivulets of sand run down between his jewellery and his scales. Teak loved mocking his penchant for sparkly things, though she had yet to prove how it affected his ability to work. He’d only been working with the older skydancer for a short while, but a few close calls meant the pair were closer than simple co-workers. Iphis suspected it was more than just her job as a mentor to keep his sanguine butt out of trouble, but he dared not to speak a word. Bounty hunters ate their young. Show any signs of weakness and you would never live it down. It explained while he was sitting out in the sun like a chained dog while Teak drank inside the water-tent with their current target. He’d lost the coin toss, and Teak was far better at charming males than he was, admittedly. A flap opened, and Teak came wobbling out, cackling as she hoisted a pearlcatcher’s arm around her shoulder. She stumbled, and the pearlcatcher laughed with her. Both were incredibly drunk. Iphis sat up, then stretched, discretely checking his talismans. Now would not be the time to break the illusion. Teak offered the other dragon a hand up onto the wagon Iphis was pulling, before swinging up into the seat with a grace that contradicted her drunkenness. From any other perspective, the longneck taxi driver pulled out of the spot where he was resting, carting the two dragons off to yet another sleazy caravan. They were popular around this time of year, as the farms nearby had given profitable harvests, and moonshine was plenty. It didn’t take long for the pearlcatcher, a lucrative businessman charged for tax evasion, to brag about his profits and drunkenly spill his secrets to Teak. If it weren’t for Dingo’s insistence on his debts to be paid, the pair would have simply killed him and completed the contract. But Dingo saw a profit, and a profit had to be made. Iphis rolled his eyes. He saw his part in this. Teak was the sassy, foolhardy brains, and Iphis was the brawn. Despite his insistence on the use of illusions and conjurations, with Teak’s uncanny ability to start a fight, he would always end up being the one knocking heads together. A thud and a grunt make his ‘longneck’ ears stand up. Teak had moved too quickly; he was still on the main highway. A caravan could appear from the wasteland’s heat waves, and his cover could be blown. He turned off the highway and began to run, causing the wagon to rattle and bounce. A masculine groan escaped from the wagon, and Iphis felt a cold dread flood him. That was not Teak. Parking the wagon under the shade of a long-expired monster’s carcass, the young imperial turned to see a pale, clammy pearlcatcher standing on top of the wagon. Sides heaving, he pulled the poisoned knife from between his ribs and brandished it at Iphis. “Ya….. Bloody *******! Ye don’t thin’ I caught on to ya’s tricks! I’s gots tricks of me own!” His thick accent irked Iphis. Chatty targets were easier to kill but got into your head. Iphis would be hearing those one for days. Still in his longneck guise, he slowly reached into his pocket before diving back. Where he stood wobbled a poisoned dagger, thrown from high atop the wagon. “Bounce, ya *******! I won’ give ye me gold!” Iphis circled the wagon, watching the pearlcatcher spin to keep his eyes on him. “Where’s your gold, you old fat sand-licker?!” “Ye thieving *******, I wouldn’t tell ye if ye’s was me grandsons! Now bugger off before I kells ye missus!” Iphis divulged a little. “You drank it all, didn’t ya?” “Nay, ye witless *******! Ye sound like me bloody nag! I didn’t bloody drink it!” While he was gesturing wildly, a dark shadow was looming behind him. A large split slowly dripped blood into one of Teak’s eyes, but Iphis knew she would be loving the aesthetic. A knife to the chin quickly ended the pearlcatcher’s argument, but sent him in a flurry of swear words. “Get ye ***** off me! Aye don’t have it on me! Stop threatening me, or I’ll have ye dead!” Iphis glanced at Teak, but she barely registered his glare. Pressing the dagger against his chin, the pearlcatcher gulped and fell silent. That faint movement caused a drop of blood to form on the tip of the knife. “I’m getting bored my friend. Let’s start guessing. Every wrong guess means my ‘*****’ gets to cut off a finger.” “Aye, aye! I knew ye bloody outlaws would catch up to me! It’s in Ratspine Cove!” Iphis feigned surprise. “I was going to guess…. But I guess you wanted to go first. Pity it was wrong.” The pearlcatcher screamed as a cleanly sliced fingertip landed in the sand. “Murkgull Lake” “Not even a place. You need a map.” Another scream, and soft thud. “Ashwood Drag!” “Better.” The pearlcatcher paused, suspiciously looking at the young imperial. “Pity it’s too wide of an area to search. Teak?” Another fingertip tumbled. “Aye, Aye, Aye, stop! It’s hidden…. It’s hidden in a massive cave,” “Yes?” “It’s very popular” “A terrible hiding place” “Oh yes many have gone here, but only I have gone deepest” Iphis paused. “It stinks too!” Iphis had had enough. Teak stood solemnly there, knife at the throat of the cackling pearlcatcher. “And this cavern’s name?” Iphis enquired softly. “Ya mother’s ***!” The pearlcatcher guffawed once, before Teak moved quickly. He hadn’t even had the chance to draw in a breath before his head thumped next to his fingers in the sand. Teak stayed silent for a heartbeat, then two. Iphis stared at her. As a corner of her mouth started to lift, Iphis whirled and stomped away, gripping the poisoned dagger tightly. Teak jumped down from the wagon, lithely pocketing the treasure the pearlcatcher had carried before his demise. “Beaten in wits by an idiot”, she crooned softly, before laughing deeply. It was quite unbecoming of her tittery species. He was not living this one down for a while. >The bleeped out words are all the same one. The censorship is quite funny when you imagine a dirty old pearlcatcher beeping every second word.
