Biography
______ |
Gladioli is more than a dragon, more than a mortal creature; she is a Specter of the Beyond. During the longest night, as the dragons of Valhall mourned their dead following the First War, the wails of sorrow that shattered the night created something unheard of—something entirely new, never before seen in the Waking Plane. It ripped a hole in the Veil itself and from it Gladioli stepped forth, unobtrusive and quiet. She took the shape of the Icefields' own Gaolers, pulled their thick coat around herself and allowed her soul to settle in a mortal form. Her steps were silent as she made her way across the icy fields, not so much as a single flake of snow disturbed beneath her feet, and the raging winds did not tear at her as it did the survivors. No mortal touch could reach her that night, not their winds nor their weather, her very essence not yet fully immersed in the Waking Plane. She was the very epitome of a ghost amongst the living, beyond reach, and the living gave her a wide berth as she walked. Gladioli was the First, new and unnatural; a Flower of Mourning. | _ |

The dragons of Valhall had been wary, at first, as this new dragon emerged from the Wound Eternal like an ominous creature of night. On edge and tense, they had watched as she walked right up to one of their own recently fallen, and the warriors surrounding the corpse could only watch. For what could they do? Weakened, frozen, downtrodden- they had nothing left to fight with.
Without as much as a single word, she closed her eyes and bowed her head. Flowers detached from her thick coat and fluttered to the frozen ground, the thin roots immediately burrowing down. In a matter of seconds, a gathering of delicate, glowing flowers surrounded the dead, and wide eyes followed her form as she lifted her head once more and moved on to the next deceased. In her wake, the unearthly flowers hummed softly as the winds tore at them, but their glow never faded nor did they buckle under the fierce weather. Slowly, the red-coated battlefield was transformed into a meadow of impossible flowers cradling their dead.
It took her hours to cleanse the field, to shepherd all the souls to where they needed to be, but her efforts were not in vain. The Beyond got its due souls that night.
And a gentle, lingering peace swallowed the turmoil and overwhelming grief that'd suffocated those still living. That day, Gladioli had brought some measure of closure to the dragons of Valhall, as the Fates had intended. For this was her purpose. To give peace to those that desperately needed it.
But she also knew there was no way she could do that for all of Sornieth on her own. She was but one creature, her reach limited, and some part of her did not want to leave the clan she'd found herself with. And so she prayed to the Fates that they bless her with aid in the monumental task she'd been burdened with- someone to help her shepherd the lost souls and lingering ones through the Veil.
They did. Five dragons emerged from the Beyond in the following weeks. And together, they could find a way to reach all the lands.

The Free
» In particular cases, such as with Hrimfaxi, some dragons she spends the time with have been gifted some of her flowers. These dragons she prefers more than others due to shared gifts and a deep, spiritual connection rarely found among the living. |
Essence of Life
» Her flowers also possess the ability to heal, to some degree. Withered plants will flourish in her presence, minor injuries heal faster, and weary minds may find peace from their troubles. |
